Musei Capitolini: Museum History

Curated by ACT

This museum is one of many under the umbrella of Rome City Council. It is also the oldest public museum in the world, having been established in 1471. Throughout the site, there is extensive information about its history and collections, with many high quality photographs of its two buildings, architecture, sculptures, and paintings. There is also a virtual tour that can be accessed under 'Digital Museum.' If you click on 'Musei in Commune' underneath the heading 'Musei Capitolini' on the left, you will also find all of the other museums overseen by Rome City Council, each of which can be explored in a similar fashion. Truly a wealth of material! (Note: Text for some sections may not be available in English.)
