Lettuce Exploration

Kathy Henderson’s book And the Good Brown Earth introduces the class to how a vegetables grows and changes over time. They use different types of lettuce to do a close study of this quick-growing vegetable. Learners consider the look, feel, taste, and smell of three different varieties of lettuce and chart their findings. Finally, they craft a poem based on a model. What a fun activity that incorporates both math and language arts! Make sure to have them do some counting in order to meet all of the Common Core standards listed by the publisher.
