Identifying Proportional and Non-Proportional Relationships in Graphs

Graph a relationship to find out if it is proportional. The lesson introduces the criteria to determine whether a relationship is a proportional relationship by its graph. Pupils graph relationships and determine whether the resulting graph shows that it is proportional. The lesson is part five in a 22-part series.

Instructional Ideas

  • Have the class determine the constant of proportionality using the tables
  • Lead a discussion on what can be done to make a non-proportional relationship into a proportional relationship
Classroom Considerations

  • Assumes students know how to plot points

  • Lesson plan provides anticipated pupil responses to discussion questions, better equipping you to facilitate the discussion
  • The problem set includes the coordinate graphs needed to graph the relationships

  • The lines drawn in the answer keys are not all drawn correctly
