Henry George Clopper Ketchum the Railway to Glory or Despair

This is a fascinating, largely forgotten piece of Canadian history. In the late 19th century, Henry Ketchum, an engineer from Fredericton, New Brunswick, envisioned the building of a railway to transport ships from the Bay or Fundy to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a 17-mile journey. After 16 miles of the Chignecto Ship Railway were built near Amherst, Nova Scotia, the government funding was removed and it was never finished. This virtual exhibit focusses on the history of the project and how the idea of it continues to fascinate engineers even today.
