It might help when working with this resource to give an example of a composition function. For example, the amount of time it takes to get to work depends on the amount of traffic; the amount traffic depends on the time of day. Therefore the amount of time is a function of traffic, which is a function of time of day. The resource does align well to the Common Core, but the importance of the inverse function is not clear in the commentary since there is no mention of it in the initial problem.
