Instructional Ideas

  • Consider handing out lyrics and challenging the class to find metaphors and similes
  • Discuss various elements of poetry (outline provided), tying them into the song activity when possible
  • Use the Shel Silverstein poetry example suggestions to demonstrate rhythm and repetition, or choose some of your own

Classroom Considerations

  • Be sure to hand out some of the poems so scholars can underline rhyming or repeating words
  • You must create a free profile to access the student packet

Pros

  • An engaging way to get learners interested in poetry
  • Encourages your class to see song lyrics as poetry, and vice versa

Cons

  • None
