How do the changing seasons affect the homes where we live? This question is at the forefront of engineering and design projects. Challenge your physical science class to step into the role of an architect to build a model home capable of efficiently handling the transfer of heat energy. Lab groups then run tests on their model homes to determine the effectiveness of their designs.

Instructional Ideas

  • Consider extending building time for the model home to allow for more formative feedback throughout the process
  • Assign roles within groups to provide more structure to the experiment and ensure all learning goals are met

Classroom Considerations

  • Schedule time in the computer lab for working pairs to complete the extension research project
  • Review the materials list to determine the amount of supplies needed for groups of four to five

Pros

  • The model home created by lab groups can be saved for use in future investigations of heat energy
  • The teacher's guide includes worksheets, scoring rubrics, extension activities, and pacing for the experiment

Cons

  • None
