App Overview

Scroll through the list of words on the home page, and select one. The word appears whole at first, and is then scrambled by a troop of cartoon monsters who walk across the screen.

Entertaining and interactive, each word page is geared to support the learner. Here's what you can do on the page:

  • Drag the scrambled letters over their corresponding outline to put the word back together again
  • Tap the word button to hear the selection read aloud, along with a definition that includes kid-geared examples
  • Click the picture of the house on the top right to jump to the home page and select a different word

Once all the letters are dragged to form the word, a fun animation helps demonstrate the meaning. Replay the animation by touching the circular arrow at the bottom of the screen, or go to a new word by clicking the right or left arrow.

Instructional Ideas

  • Set up a literacy center, initially with the guidance of an adult, and independently after a bit of practice
  • Ask pupils to say each letter out loud as they move it to match its outline

Classroom Considerations

While the description claims to develop spelling skills, the words used in the game (such as cooperate and gargantuan) do not correspond developmentally with the types of words learners at this level are ready to spell. Also, there are only two or three words per alphabet letter, though this could be growing, as the developer states that they plan to add new words weekly.

Pros

  • Fun
  • Engaging
  • Easy to use

Cons

  • Words do not match reading level of target audience
