Curated by ACT

A map of the United States and territories showing the expansion from the formation of the original states to the purchase of the Danish West Indies (Virgin Islands) in 1917. The map is color-coded to show the original states, the states admitted between 1791 and 1860 (including Kentucky from Virginia in 1792, and Maine from Massachusetts in 1820), states admitted between 1861 and 1917 (including West Virginia from Virginia in 1863), the organized territories in 1917 (Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines), and unorganized territories in 1917 (Samoan Islands, Guam, Virgin Islands and St. Croix, the Panama Canal Zone, and the Caribbean Corn Islands off the Mosquito Coast of Nicaragua). The map shows state boundaries and capitals, major cities, lakes, rivers, and coastal features. Inset maps detail Alaska with the gold-bearing regions shown, the Hawaiian Islands, the Samoan Islands, Guam, Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, the Panama Canal Zone, the Corn Islands, and the Philippine Islands.
