Common Core mathematical practices require that young mathematicians not only know how to add fractions with unlike denominators, but also to recognize when adding fractions are appropriate for the word problem. Fifth graders are given nine different word problems and asked to identify when and why adding fractions is correct. This could be used as an independent activity, but a better use would be in a collaborative setting to generate a classroom discussion of the similarities and differences among the questions. The commentary and solutions page provide to teachers the necessary knowledge to make learning a success.
