The name "Acholi" is used for peoples living in the former Acholi District of northern Uganda and the adjoining area of the southern Sudan. The primary language of Acholi today is Luo, a Western Nilotic language spoken by groups scattered across East Africa; many also speak English and/or Kiswahili. Acholi farmers rely mainly on iron hoes and other hand tools. The most common domestic animals are chickens and goats, with some cattle. The old staples of finger millet, sorghum, sesame, and various peas, beans, and leafy green vegetables continue to be grown, along with twentieth-century crops such as cassava, maize, peanuts (groundnuts), fruits, and cotton.
