Color Reactions that Involve the Transfer of Electrons

Demonstrate the aging of materials as you assist the class in creating rust. Individuals demonstrate oxidation-reduction reactions that result in the rusting of materials, differentiate between materials that will and will not rust, and learn how to decrease the rate of the oxidation-reduction process. The lesson concludes as pupils discuss their findings and brainstorm additional ideas for the future. This is the final exercise in an 8-part series.

Instructional Ideas
  • Perform an additional oxidation-reduction reaction to further demonstrate this concept
  • Play a memory game with the class using metals discussed in the lesson
Classroom Considerations
  • Assist ELLs and students with special needs as they complete equations and respond to open-ended questions
  • This is the final exercise in an eight-part series
  • Ability to relate these concepts to everyday situations
  • Detailed steps allow individual progression through the activity or group work, whichever is preferred
