Lesson Plan

Carrots, Eggs, or Coffee

Curated and Reviewed by Lesson Planet

As part of the Health Smart social and emotional learning unit, seventh graders are taught the T.R.A.I.N Method (Talk to others, Resilience, Accept it, Inspiration from others, Need to be prepared) of coping with disappointment and adversity. Groups brainstorm scenarios where a middle schooler may be faced with adversity and suggest possible ways to deal with the situations. The class then reads the parable "Carrot, Egg or Coffee Bean" and discusses what the story has to do with adversity. Finally, individuals consider whether they are the carrot, the egg, or the coffee bean.
