Instructional Ideas

  • Explain the differences between bar graphing and leaf plots and how data collection drives business
  • Give each student a handful of colored candy or buttons and have them separate them to find out the mean, median, mode, and average and then make a class graph as a reference
  • Line up the class by height and then have pupils graph the heights in their journals and find the median and mode

Classroom Considerations

  • Resource will take three days, but can be condensed into two days
  • Practice tasks are based on book The Button Box by Margarette S. Reid
  • Wichita Falls, Texas is misspelled on resource
  • Donations of pipe cleaners, buttons, and other materials needed
  • Worksheets are not based on book, they can stand alone

Pros

  • Resource has a plethora of activities for student engagement
  • Integrates literacy with math
  • Concept repetiton through different exercises
