By drawing five more objects to existing sets, scholars begin to understand the concept of addition. They count pails and draw five more, totaling them and recording the sums. There are three of these followed by four more similar equations without the visuals. For these, they simply read a number sentence in word form, each of which include an addend with 5 more to make the total, which learners write. Every addend and sum here is single-digit, and the numbers 0-10 are written along the bottom for reference. Use manipulatives to help kinesthetic learners grasp this concept.
