Buoyant Boats

For Teachers 3rd - 5th
Students design and construct a boat out of aluminum foil and a few other simple materials. The boats then be tested by floating them in water, then adding mass until they sink. They explore the various shapes of boat construction.

Inventions 2: The Impact

For Teachers 7th - 8th
Students research inventors and inventions and their impacts. In this invention lesson, students research inventions and their affects in good and bad ways.

Pressure in Fluids

For Teachers Pre-K - 6th
Pupils study the properties of fluids under different circumstances.  In this pressure fluids instructional activity students view a demonstration, complete an activity and describe what they learned.

Serc: Investigating the Effects of Density and Volume of a Cartesian Diver

For Teachers 3rd - 5th
In this lesson, students will investigate why the Cartesian diver dives and rises in a 2 liter bottle. They will also, through their own discovery, come up with a question and then change one variable and record their results. Students...

Teach Engineering: Cartesian Diver

For Teachers 9th - 10th
Students observe Pascal's law, Archimedes' principle, and the ideal gas law as a Cartesian diver moves within a closed system.
Activity
Science Bob Pflugfelder

Science Bob: Make a Cartesian Diver!

For Students 3rd - 7th
This site presents a procedure for creating a cartesian diver, a miniature submarine which rises or sinks depending upon the water pressure within a closed bottle. The site also introduces basic concepts of water and air pressure.

Serc: Cartesian Diver Race

For Teachers 9th - 10th
In this lab, students will have to build a Cartesian diver to bring to class to race. I do this as an introduction to the gas laws, specifically Boyle's Law which deals with volume and pressure of gas at the same temperature. The...
Activity
PBS

Pbs Kids: Cartesian Diver

For Students 3rd - 8th
This PBS site shows users how they can make their own cartesian divers, discover how it works, and have some fun at the same time.
Activity
Exploratorium

Exploratorium: Science Snacks: Condiment Diver

For Students 9th - 10th
Use a condiment packet as a Cartesian diver to show how pressure changes cause the "diver" to float, sink or hover.
Activity
Science is Fun

Science Is Fun: The Cartesian Diver

For Students 3rd - 5th
A simple experiment in buoyancy where you discover how to make a packet of sauce or candy float or sink at will, and why you are able to do this.

Little Shop of Physics: The Amazing Physics of Everyday Objects

For Students 3rd - 8th
Try out these experiments you can do with items you might already have around the house: "Two Ball Bounce," "Cartesian Diver," "Straw Flute," "Bernoulli Ball," and others. Two experiments, "Imploding Pop Can" and "Balloon in a Bottle,"...
