The bureaucracy of the federal government has continued to grow throughout its history, in response to a variety of issues and programs, e.g., Roosevelt's New Deal, the Depression years, and the Cold War.

In the 1970s, members of government began reducing the size of the government, with some success. After the September 11 attacks though, the Department of Homeland Security was created, adding new levels of bureaucracy.
