The Labor Department reported 963,000 Americans filed for unemployment benefits, less than economists had expected.

Most economists were expecting to see 7.5 million jobs lost.

The report shows 1.48 million Americans filed for unemployment last week — higher than the 1.3 million that economists estimated.

The administration says there is no reason to put a stop to the mandate, even while legal challenges against it have been filed in 27 states.

So far, there's little sign that the Delta variant has depressed hiring or prompted layoffs.

The economy still has 6.8 million fewer jobs than it did before the virus erupted in March of last year.

Applications for unemployment benefits for the week ending July 2 rose by 4,000 from the previous week, according to the Labor Department.
