Young scholars explore the Johnny Appleseed story. In this service learning lesson, students sequence the life cycle of apple trees and recognize how Johnny Appleseed worked as a philanthropist.

Ninth graders gather samples of different tree leaves in their neighborhoods, and on school grounds, and identify several species of common South Carolina trees using leaf and growth characteristics with aid of dichotomous key.

Students research storm preparedness in their community. They interview city officials to determine the current emergency plans, warning systems, etc. Students write an analysis of the situation.

Students examine the cycle of nutrients in a forest. They research the concepts of decomposing and recycling within a forest.

Pupils demonstrate formats of opportunity cost. Students illustrate this concept by choosing two pictures and analyzing them for color and cost. They write a short paper explaining their findings.
