As News 12 has reported, the park was a former dumping ground for Northrup Grumman and 16 chemical drums have already been discovered at the park's ball field.

However, the agency says samples from the soil and drums did test positive for contaminants that have been found at the former Northrop Grumman dumping site over the years.

The DEC said initial results from six chemical drums and soil found petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents, which environmental experts say is toxic.

The 16 chemical drums were found buried under the baseball field at the park, sparking concerns from many in the community about the decades-long cleanup by Grumman.

The agency says it does not appear that the barrels have leaked.

The DEC said it reviewed the final engineering report for the removal action that the town of Oyster Bay conducted around 2006, several investigations of the area by Northrop Grumman as well as aerial photography from the 1960’s.
