NASA and Design Squad Nation aim to inspire a new generation of engineers with five hands-on challenges designed for grades four to eight. Young engineers design a landing device that protects a hard-boiled egg, create robotic arms like those on rovers built by NASA, and test their devices by attempting to pick up and move cups to a specified location. Scholars also make a device capable of taking core samples—similar to tools that collect samples from planets and moons. They develop a device that detects magnetic fields and design a setup that changes the direction of a steel ball using magnetic force—modeling the gravitational pull of spacecraft by planetary bodies. The activities give young learners ways to apply STEM concepts and spark interest in engineering and space science careers.
