Social & Emotional Learning in Middle School: Social Awareness

Social & Emotional Learning in

Middle School:

Social Awareness

Social awareness is considered one of five core competencies by The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). Skills that make up the concept of social awareness include:

  • Perspective-taking
  • Empathy
  • Appreciating diversity
  • Respect for others

A middle school is a place where the social world takes on a whole new dynamic. Individuals go through pivotal personal changes that make their outlook—on themselves and others—a new territory to explore. Scholars have the opportunity to broaden their social awareness by way of thoughtful discussion, self-reflection, and honest experience.
