After first using a coordinate grid to graph the ordered pairs corresponding to crime locations, pupils must then write a recommendation to the police chief about where to deploy her officers. This short formative assessment would fit perfectly in the introductory lesson of a fifth or sixth grade unit on the coordinate plane.
