If the whole thing cannot be recycled, can the parts? In this activity groups dissect old toys and electronics to determine what is inside. They sort components based upon material while also identifying the parts that are simple machines. The whole class then participates in a discussion on ways to recycle cell phones and mobile devices.

Instructional Ideas

  • Research the way electronics are recycled
  • Take pictures of the intact item and post above the parts, so during the gallery walk, class members can see what the parts were originally
