Learn one method of chunking the text. Chunking, or breaking a text down into smaller sections, is a great way to increase reading comprehension, and in the case of this lesson, practice the skill of summarizing. Whether your class is working with a short story, novel, or non-fiction text, this offers nice summarizing practice. After reading the complete text, assign a small section of the text to each pair of learners or small group. They will then write 1-2 sentences summarizing their section on a strip of paper. When all groups are finished, you can combine the strips into a class summary of the whole text.
