George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant" is the focus of this reading and writing activity. After reading the essay, research the British control of Africa and Burma at the time the essay was written (1936). Additionally, pupils write a summary of the Burmese political situation, and describe the main message of the piece. This would work well as a language arts reading comprehension activity, or as a cross-curricular activity in a history class, as well as homeschool.
