Project Budburst - Citizen Science

This Project Budburst - Citizen Science lesson plan also includes:

Budburst is the emergence of new leaves on a tree in spring. This activity requires learners to identify trees, take careful observations of their tree and note phenological dates - the date of the first leaf, first leaf falling, first flower, or first ripe fruit - throughout the year. This data is then passed on, with new groups of scholars adding their information to a growing database every year.

Instructional Ideas

  • Activity fits in unit on weather or climate, plant and tree growth, or environmental changes
  • The first year, have learners collect leaves and either dry them or do leaf rubbings to include with data
Classroom Considerations

  • Days one through three are to be completed over a two-week period and day four is to be repeated once weekly (ideally) throughout the year
  • Link in overview does not work; use the following instead: http://budburst.org
  • Needs include an area on campus with new or newer trees for scholars to measure
Pros

  • A great activity for scholars to see changes in plant growth from year to year
  • budburst.org link includes more activities, resources, and a place to input data
Cons

  • Does not include any critical thinking questions; teachers may want to add some of their own
