The Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights. The language of these seminal historical documents presents a challenge for even the best readers. Here's a group activity that helps all class members understand the content and importance of these writings. After a brief lecture about the history of the documents, each team is assigned a different text, and then they work together to rewrite the main idea in modern language. They also list the pros and cons of this main idea and find five examples of how this concept is reflected in today's society. Groups then present their findings to the entire class.
