Assess young mathematicians' understanding of the role parentheses play in numerical expressions with a quick quiz. Looking at three problems involving the addition and multiplication of single-digit numbers, students must first evaluate each expression and then determine if their values would change with the parentheses removed. This simple assessment would make a great addition to a lesson series on the order of operations in the upper-elementary grades.
