Determining Surface Area of Three-Dimensional Figures

Cast a net over the formulas for surface area. Pupils use nets to develop surface area formulas in the 19th segment in a 22-part series. They first see the patterns of similar calculations in finding the area of the faces of rectangular prisms. Then, class members develop formulas for surface area of rectangular prisms and cubes.

Instructional Ideas
  • Provide other nets to verify the formula works for all rectangular prisms
Classroom Considerations
  • The class should understand nets
  • Rulers are needed to measure the lengths of the net
Pros
  • Includes a template for those needing one
  • Contains tables to help organize the computations
Cons
  • None
