Instructional Ideas

  • Fill the sandbox or exploratory play area with construction toys (dump trucks, bulldozers, etc.) and building blocks and/or Legos
  • To add a bilingual element to the lesson also read Susan Lowell's The Three Little Javelinas
  • For older students include a mini-lesson on point of view by reading Jon Scieszka' The TRUE Story of the 3 Little Pigs 
Classroom Considerations

  • Required materials include a couple of bricks, several sticks, some straw, a sample blueprint, blue paper, white colored pencils, crayons, rulers, glue, and popsicle sticks
  • Check for food allergies before engaging in the snack time activity

  • Includes art and math connections
  • The modified version of the "So Early in the Morning" song substitutes construction verbs (pound, saw, paint, stack)
