Connected Text

Eleven reading activities track scholars' level of fluency while reading connected text. Working collaboratively, pairs read a specific text while their partner gauges their accuracy, speed, intonation, phrasing, and expression. Progress is tracked using a log over several trials.

Instructional Ideas
  • Make an anchor chart of fluent reading tips; encourage learners to reference it before they begin a timed practice
  • Perform a timed practice as an example in front of the class
  • Discuss the importance of reading practice with parents and guardians during Back-to-School Night and conference, review progress and offer tips and answer questions
Classroom Considerations
  • Reading routines will take practice, start slowly and often till class members are confident in their recording skills 
  • A set of reading activities are the final part of a five-part unit
  • Lesson one works with any book of your choice
  • Extension activities and adaptions are provided
  • Allows for peer and self-evaluation
