First, beginning biologists extract DNA from wheat. Then they use paper strip DNA strands to model possible DNA sequences. They arrange strips to construct a cell wall model. The intent is to get your class thinking about how scientists are genetically modifying corn to produce cell walls that will make a cost-effective biofuel as an alternative to fossil fuels. Though the lesson states that it is appropriate for fifth through eighth graders, the DNA extraction requires previous lab experience.
