Asher Brown Durand's "Genesee Oaks" offers an opportunity for learners to develop their skill at reading paintings. Viewers respond to questions that focus their attention on different aspects of the landscape, and then create a storyboard that depicts what happened before or after the painting.
- Ask high schoolers to locate current images of the Genesee Valley, especially one from different seasons
- Project a versed image of the landscape and asks viewers how the reversal changes the impression made by the painting
