App Overview

Algebra Touch is a well-named app as it uses the touchable interface of the tablet to teach one how to solve single-variable equations. The app allows users in two different modes.

  • Explain Mode: Walks users through simplifying expression and solving equations in a step-by-step mode
  • Practice Mode: Users practice simplifying expressions and solving equations through the touch interface

Topics Include:

  • Addition and subtraction with positive and negative numbers
  • Integer factors
  • Simplify fractions
  • Order of operations
  • Factor out GCF
  • Distributive property
  • Combine like-terms
  • Simplify algebraic expressions
  • Simplify algebraic fractions
  • Solving basic and more complex equations

When solving equations, one can touch and move integers and monomials to opposite sides of the equation and combine like terms. To show the importance of using opposite operations, one can also touch the equal sign and then select the operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) that can be applied to both sides of the equation.

Instructional Ideas

A useful classroom feature is the ability to create one’s own problem sets. Have students create their own problems and exchange tablets with a partner to solve each other’s problems.

Have novice learners explore new concepts and gain insight. Afterward, center discussions around why expressions can be simplified in a certain way.

Classroom Considerations

Use Algebra Touch for both novice and experienced algebra pupils. The simple interface allows novice users to gain insight into algebra without getting bogged down in the arithmetic, and the experienced users will benefit from a basic skills review.

  • Great interface

  • Limited equations
