Social & Emotional Learning in

Middle School:

Self-Management

The Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) states self-management as one of five social and emotional competencies. Six skills that make up the competency are:

  • Impulse control
  • Stress management
  • Self-discipline
  • Self-motivation
  • Goal setting
  • Organizational skills

Middle school brings forth a momentous amount of new responsibilities. Gaining self-management skills eases stress levels and offers a clear path for successful educational outcomes. By setting goals and controlling one's self, objectives may not seem as daunting, and the drive to achieve will flourish.
