Eighth-graders develop their ability to read and understand a complex text as they consider the plight of refugees. The first unit uses Thanhha Lai’s novel, Inside Out & Back Again, as well as informational text, to build background knowledge of the war in Vietnam and the fall of Saigon. Unit 2 introduces informational texts that broaden learners’ understanding of the universal themes of the refugee experience across cultures. The final performance task for Unit 3 has individuals draw on what they have learned to craft two, free verse narrative poems that reflect the refugee experience.
