EngageNY Grade 7 ELA Module 4b: Reading and Research: Water is Life
Water may be everywhere but supplies of freshwater are dwindling. An eight-week, three-unit module takes up the topic of water sustainability and freshwater management. In Unit 1, seventh graders read Barbara Kingsolver’s article, “Water is Life” and excerpts from Charles Fishman’s, The Big Thirst, to build background knowledge about the topic. Unit 2 has them use the Stakeholder Consequences Decision-Making process as they research strategies for better agricultural and industrial water management. In Unit 3, pupils craft a position paper addressing what they believe would be a good place to begin to improve the use of freshwater.
