EngageNY Grade 7 ELA: Module 3, Unit 3: Writing a Narrative Based on an Event from the Life of Frederick Douglass

Collector: Ann V.

Unit 3 of Module 3 collection of eleven lessons has seventh graders crafting their own children’s picture book. Patterned after Frederick Douglass: The Last Day of Slavery, the illustrated children's book they read in Unit 2, writers choose an event from the life of Frederick Douglass to use as their focus. They learn about narrative writing techniques through a series of mini lessons centered on sensory language, precise word choice, strong verbs, and dialogue. To demonstrate what they have learned about Frederick Douglass and about powerful storytelling, individuals present their books as a final performance task.
