EngageNY Grade 5 ELA Module 4: Gathering Evidence and Speaking to Others: Natural Disasters in the Western Hemisphere

Collector: Ann V.

The three units in ELA Module 4 integrate science content with social studies. Fifth graders read literature and informational text about natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes and how natural disasters impact the lives of people who live through them. They analyze informational texts and learn how to cite and organize evidence from primary source documents and speeches to gather background information on the role the American Red Cross and other multination aid organizations play in disaster relief in the Western Hemisphere. Pupils develop a speech to share their opinion about how to prioritize aid following a hypothetical hurricane in Mexico.
