EngageNY Grade 5 ELA Module 2a, Unit 3: Reading and Writing Like a Scientist: Observing Nature, Conducting Research, and Creating a Field Journal Entry
Collector:
Ann V.
The 15 lessons in Unit 3 focus on the reading and writing skills scientists use while observing, researching, and recording information in field journals. The unit begins with young scientists learning how to observe and to write precise field notes. Groups practice these skills as they research insects found in the rainforest. They then write narratives in the form of a rainforest explorer’s field journal. The mid-unit and final assessments ask learners to demonstrate what they have learned by examining unfamiliar information texts and creating field journal pages on the howler monkey.
