EngageNY Grade 5 ELA Module 2a: Researching to Build Knowledge and Teaching Others: Biodiversity in Rainforests of the Western Hemisphere
Collector:
Ann V.
The literacy focus of this three-unit module is on reading scientific and technical text and writing to inform and explain. In Unit 1, young scholars build background knowledge of the rainforest and the scientists who study them. Kathryn Lasky’s case study of researcher Meg Lowman, The Most Beautiful Roof in the World, serves as the anchor text for Unit 2. Class members learn how to analyze the features of scientific field guides. The module concludes with individuals modeling what they have learned about documenting their research as they investigate an insect found in the rainforest.
