EngageNY Grade 12 ELA Module 1: Reading and Writing Personal Narratives
The first unit in Module 1 uses The Autobiography of Malcolm X as the core text. Scholars practice close reading, evidence-based writing and discussion, critical analysis of narrative texts, and narrative writing techniques. Marmon Silko’s narrative essay, “Yellow Woman and A Beauty of the Spirit” anchors the second unit in the module which continues the focus on personal narratives. Writers also begin drafting a narrative essay. The final unit in the module asks class members to identify the narrative techniques Alex Haley and Marmon Siklo use and incorporate them into their own writing. For the final performance task, seniors craft a personal essay suitable for the Common Application prompt for a college application.
