He emphasizes three often-overlooked truths: how impossible the moon landing seemed in 1961, how extraordinarily difficult it was to achieve, and how transformative its legacy has been.

When President Kennedy set the moonshot goal, the U.S. lacked rockets, spaceships, computers, and even certainty about whether humans could think in zero gravity. Over the next decade, NASA and its partners developed reliable real-time computing, hand-sewn space suits, and even hand-woven computer memory. The effort required 425,000 people and what Fishman calls perhaps “the hardest thing human beings have ever done.”

Far from yielding only “Velcro and Tang,” Apollo accelerated the computer revolution, pioneering integrated circuits and dependable computing that led directly to modern technologies like the iPhone. Fishman argues that Apollo shows nothing is beyond reach when society commits to a shared mission. Just as America tackled the impossible in the 1960s, he believes today’s challenges—from climate change to political division—can be solved if we decide they matter enough.\n
