In recent years, she has focused on First Amendment freedoms—speech, thought, conscience, association, religion, and press—believing they are the foundation for protecting all other rights. She stresses that without free speech, constitutional guarantees are meaningless, merely “parchment barriers.” Drawing on history, Strossen explains that every major movement for justice, from civil rights to equality struggles, succeeded only because free expression was protected. She warns against the false choice between free speech and equality, emphasizing that censorship has always been a weapon against justice. Quoting John Lewis, she reminds us that without free speech, the civil rights movement “would have been a bird without wings.” For Strossen, the most vital right is not the right to remain silent, but the right not to remain silent—and to continue transforming America’s ideals into real rights for all.\n
