While the Dutch introduced a system of formal education for the local population of Indonesia, it was restricted to certain privileged children. It was only in 1920 that the first university was established in Indonesia—the Bandung Institute of Technology. At sovereignty in 1949, Indonesia faced the huge challenge of educating its people and was virtually starting from scratch. It had only ten universities, a few hundred secondary schools, and a population that was fundamentally illiterate. Since then, one of Indonesia’s singular achievements is the improvement of basic literacy to 96 percent today. However, the quality of education suffers due to a variety of factors.
