In Indonesian society, the role of the individual is subordinate to that of the group. Although development has brought many imported, impersonal elements of urban life such as high-rise apartments, mobile phones, malls, fast-food franchises, and movie theaters, Indonesians interact with them in their own unique way. Other primary values most all Indonesians share are gotong royong, which means mutual cooperation; hormat, which is respect; and malu, which refers to avoiding embarrassment. Perhaps because Indonesians live in a place in which the physical world around them can be tumultuous due to the frequency of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and extreme weather events, they cultivate harmony in their social realm. An important component of this imperative is respecting one’s neighbors, not embarrassing anyone or oneself, and avoiding conflict at all costs. Indonesians value politeness and modesty, and as reflected in their grammar, they place themselves in the background or at the end of sentences.
