Nestling at the foot of the hill where Rome’s emperors once lived, the church was buried under...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eIt has taken “30 \u003ca href='https://www.theguardian.com/science/2016/mar/23/basilica-di-santa-maria-antiqua-reopens-in-rome-after-30-years' target='_blank' rel='nofollow'\u003eyears”\u003c/a\u003e of loving restoration to save the early Christian art of the 6th century Basilica di Santa Maria Antiqua in Rome.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e Nestling at the foot of the hill where Rome’s emperors once lived, the church was buried under rubble by an earthquake in 847 and only uncovered in 1900.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e It is called the “Sistine Chapel” of the early Middle Ages because it collected the very best of figurative culture of the Christian world between Rome and Byzantium – and has escaped the constant updates performed on other historic buildings in Rome.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e Now it is open to the public for the first time. \u003cbr/\u003e\u003cbr/\u003e “This church has stayed intact, untouched, even if heavily damaged by the passage of time.
