Many were falling by the wayside...\nA web of support, and in particular, an army of dedicated community volunteers, is critical while high school students are trying to navigate the daunting and often confusing college acceptance process. Many were falling by the wayside either from frustration or fatigue until an organization, Future 5, arrived with caring coaches and a mission that students should be able to realize their full life’s potential, regardless of income or family circumstances.

Based in Stamford, Connecticut, and founded in 2009 in by Clifton McFeely, Future 5 is based on “the power of connection” for each student to the 5C’s: Community, Coaches, Colleges, Careers and most importantly, to their better Character. These connections and membership in a caring community are the key for motivated students to develop the character traits of optimism, determination, and grit they will need to find success in life.

Mica Saturn, an alumni of the program, faced immediate obstacles to her educational dreams because her parents, first generation citizens, had no experience with college applications. “The Future 5 program helped with the process and my personal statement,” she recalled. “My coach, Nancy, actually took me on two college tours before I made my decision. There was a support system for me.”

Once a motivated student is willing to commit to their future, their support team does whatever it takes to help the student stay on track through high school and achieve a plan for college or career training.

For Clif, being able to make a difference is its own reward. .”The stories of student’s lives changing through Future 5 are endless”, he remarked. “We’re really the luckiest ones of all that they come to us and share their lives.”
