The senior Congress leader, who was being treated for cancer, breathed his last at a Bengaluru hospital at 4.25 on July 18 morning. His son Chandy Oommen announced the news through a Facebook post.Oommen Chandy has also served as Home Minister, Finance Minister and Labour Minister.  His expertise and leadership extended to the opposition benches, where he served as the opposition leader of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.Oommen Chandy or 'Kunjoonju' was born on October 31, 1943, in Kottayam district. He was born to Karottu Vallakalil K.V. Chandy and Baby Chandy in a Syrian Christian family at Kumarakom in Kottayam district. He received his education from various institutions such as Puthuppally M.D. School, St. George High School, C.M.S. College Kottayam, and Ernakulam Law College. Chandy became active in politics through the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and the Youth Congress.During his school days, he was the State President of the Akhila Kerala Balajanasakhyam, and later, he became active in the Kerala Students Union (KSU). He played a prominent role in the student movements and became a leader who was equally respected and recognized by supporters and opponents alike. His commitment to public service was evident when he was elected as the Youth Congress State president in 1969.At the young age of 27, in 1970, Oommen Chandy made his mark by winning the Kerala legislative assembly seat from his constituency, Puthupally, which was traditionally held by the CPI(M). Despite being from a smaller party, he triumphed against the odds and continued to represent Puthupally for numerous terms. He defeated E.M.George at that time. Since then he has been representing Puthupally constituency in Kerala Assembly. He has been representing Puthupally constituency for over five decades.During a long political career, Chandy served as Labour’s Minister in 1977 in the K. Karunakaran Ministry and held the same portfolio in the Ministry led by A.K. Antony in the succeeding cabinet. He was the Home Minister in the K. Karunakaran cabinet from December 1981 to March 1982. He also held the Finance portfolio in the United Democratic Front ministry of 1991. He was also the convener of the UDF during 1982-86 and 2001-2004. Chandy took over as Chief Minister in 2004 following the resignation of A.K. Antony. He became CM a second time in 2011. Additionally, he served as the opposition leader from 2006 to 2011 in the Kerala legislative assembly.Oommen Chandy's accessibility and dedication to the public made him a beloved leader among the masses. He was recognized for his significant development projects, such as the opening of Vizhinjam harbour, the Kochi Metro, and the Kannur International Airport, which earned him praise and UN recognition for his contributions to development projects.An astute politician, Chandy had featured prominently in the inner-party ‘group’ manoeuvring within the state unit of the Congress. He was also immensely popular with the masses. He had devised the  'Mass Contact Programme' to address the problems faced by the public during his term as Chief Minister. He was also the general secretary of the AICC at present.The slogans \"Athivegam bahudooram\" and \"Vikasanavum Karuthalaum” coined during his tenure sums up his style of administration. Though age and health issues had caught up with him in recent times, Chandy continued to be the most popular Congress leader in the state who maintains good relations with socio-political-cultural-religious leaders in the state.While his political journey was filled with accomplishments, the solar case emerged as one of the most challenging phases in Oommen Chandy's political life. Facing a barrage of accusations, he fiercely defended himself against the heat of the solar controversy. However, the CBI investigation later cleared him of any wrongdoing, confirming his innocence.Oommen Chandy's journey in politics was marked by remarkable leadership, dedication to public service, and the pursuit of development for Kerala. His enduring legacy as a respected and influential figure continues to inspire many in the political landscape.Chandy leaves behind his wife Mariamma Oommen, and children Achu Oommen, Maria Oommen and Chandy Oomen.Official mourning and closure of educational institutions, government offices, and banks have been declared in Kerala. Oommen Chandy's funeral will be held in his hometown, Puthuppally, this Thursday.
